Cher: Warner Bros. Hasn't Got A Great Interest In My CD

Despite being universally approved by fans, Cher's new album 'Closer To The Truth' has fell short of major success, with promotion coming to a halt shortly after its release. And fans have been blaming Warner Bros. Record's lacklustre handling of it.

Only one music video has been made for the album, a so-so one for first single 'Woman's World', and that was finally delivered three months after the single's release. In that time, a bizarre reading of the song's lyrics from author Jackie Collins was released on YouTube as supposed promotion. 'Woman's World' did get a (brilliant) lyric video though - on time, as well - as did follow-up single 'I Hope You Find It'. However, third single 'Take It Like A Man' didn't even get that. No, instead, the massively under-promoted single was given a poorly-received (described as "embarrassing" and "soft-core" by some fans) video consisting of advertisements for Andrew Christian underwear.

Cher saw a negative review of 'Take It Like A Man', which seemingly took shots at the song's confusing video. Moments ago, she tweeted, "I've just seen a mean 'Take It Like A Man' review. The video had nothing to do with me. I was told that it would only be shown in gay bars."

She added, "It's true that Warner Bros. hasn't got a great deal of interest in my CD. Not all - there are hard-working adorable people - but decision-makers don't seem to care that much. It's Okay, you haven't seen the last of me."

One fan responded, "It's not okay, because you deserve the best! ...So we won't see more videos for the album? No more promo stuff?" Cher answered, "I'm proud of my work, so, if you love your CD, then I did my job!"

The music videos - or lack of - are far from the only criticisms of Warner Bros. Record's handling of the album. Other concerns include: one that commercial releases of remixes for the predominantly-dance-pop album's singles have been few and far-between: and another that there has been little-to-no promotion for the album since November (Cher week on 'Dancing With The Stars') except an un-promoted UK single release of 'I Walk Alone'.

It's not all doom and gloom though as 'Closer To The Truth' will surpass sales of 300,000 in the United Sates in the next few weeks and is expected to be certified Silver in the United Kingdom in the near future. It gave Cher her highest solo Billboard 200 debut and single 'I Hope You Find It' made her the oldest woman to score a UK Top 30 single. And of course, Cher will begin touring for the album from 22 March on her 'Dressed To Kill Tour'. "The new songs kick major a** in the show", she tweeted.

Cher concluded, "Some Warner Bros. people are special to me."

Short shares:

  • 'Take It Like A Man' has fallen to #13 (from #3) on Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart.
  • Cher tweeted that a photoshoot for her 'Dressed To Kill Tour' tour book will take place on 24 February: "I'm looking for interesting Cher graphic looks for new tour book! Have photoshoot on the 24th".

  1. So GLAD Cher has noticed! Closer to the Truth is fantastic! Cher fans LOVE Closer to the Truth and are shocked at how poorly Warner Bros has marketed it. The single releases have been sloppy and to not feature Pink on IWA (a song Pink WROTE for Cher and did back-up for) is bizzzzzzarre!!!!

  2. I thought Cher said that Warner Bros wanted her album to be brilliant but they haven't done a good job. Cher';s album is brilliant and Take It Like A Man should've been released in the UK it would have done well. Don't get me wrong I like I Hope You Find It but it was a bit safe. Cher has never played it safe. Hopefully she will release another single and do a kick ass video.

  3. I have given up on WBR just as Cher has. They have a great CD and treated it and Cher like dirt. Very sad. Without WBR her CD is still selling so it shows how well it could have done with a bit of REAL help from her label. I truly hope Cher leaves WBR once and for all.

  4. Very happy Cher has spoken out. CTTT is a fantastic CD and fans love it but WBR has done a horrible job in all aspects of promotion. It goes back to the torture we all endured with the Cher & Lady Gaga duet The Greatest Thing. It was up to WBR to sign Gaga to a contract so she could not just pull the plug at the last minute. Artists work together all the time and the record co's have to get this stuff in writing. Anyway Gaga is not doing well at the moment as the other hot young girls are like Katy Perry, Miley, Rihanna, Lorde so bad charma got Gaga.

  5. Cher is not a shrinking violet - she should have had her managers handle this from the very beginning. There should have been a prerelease schedule regarding videos, singles and promotion. We love Cher but she is lazy

    1. Lazy! Really? She's the one who's put the hard work in to completing the album, going round Europe and promoting the singles and now preparing for a tour at 67 years old and you call her lazy! Unbelievable. It is WB who are lazy and who don't give a damn about Cher or her album! Some people are never happy with the work she does!

    2. Anthony I have followed Cher since "Gypsys" came out - I literally have every single, album and CD dometically and internationally. I absolutely worship Cher - but the truth is the truth; Cher even said in interviews that she just "forgot about recording her album". She's not perfect....but she is till Queen Of The World!

    3. I don't doubt that you are a fan or that you have all her singles/albums. I'm also not trying to say that she is perfect, but just because she didn't want to do the CD in the first place does not make her lazy! She probably have many reasons for not wanting to do it, but in the end she put the hard work in, completed the album and is about to go on tour! These are not the actions of someone who is lazy, WB are responsible for promotion, but they let her down. I'm sure recording an album and going on tour is far more tiring and more hard work than any of us on here could imagine. Your basically calling her lazy at her job, which is an insult!

  6. Artists like Cher are the creative element. Cher recorded a red hot album and her fans love it. Closer to the Truth is fantastic! Her record label is supposed to handle the business end and promotion. It is not like Cher can promote week after week after week. For a 67 yr-old artist her album is selling VERY well. No other woman of her age CAN SELL outside of Barbra Streisand and Dolly Parton in the country world. Cher made a contemporary album and did a great job.

  7. Well, the record company screwed up the entire release of the CD. The music vids should have hit the airwaves a week or so before the CD. There should have been three videos at least - waiting in the wings. And the radio stations will not play a female single unless its some 22 yr old shaking her ass and exposing her butt and breast! It's ridiculous and its still very much a MANS world. Let some old Rolling Stone dude release a song and its on every station 13 times a day. Its discrimination. These white men who make decisions on her work need to lose their jobs and replace them with WOMEN and GAY men who would know how to market her fabulous work. It's the promoters who screwed this up that and GAGA for pulling the track.

  8. Raven, you are 100% RIGHT! It is NOT a Woman's World in USA Radio. It's a Man's World and that is sad. The music biz is not only Ageist but it is SEXIST. Adult Contemporary radio goes crazy for anything by Paul McCartney, Rod Stewart, Elton John and other older male artists but will not play women of the same age (at least not much if at all). Cher's I Hope You Find It was PERFECT for Adult Contemporay Radio yet it never charted on the Billboard AC Charts not even one week. Cher's MALE counterparts ALLLL chart at AC radio. None of them can chart on mainstream radio (Billboard Hot 100) unless they feature a younger artist.

The Greatest Thing by Cher & Gaga WOULD have had good airplay but of course was ruined by Ga. I Walk Alone by Cher featuring Pink would also have had good airplay but WBR seems to have no interest in it. Unfortunately IWA by Cher alone will go nowhere. Thanks WBR.

  9. Its amazing to see with the lack of support from WBR, CTTT has done well!

  10. NYChristophe you are right. WBR treated Cher and CTTT like crap but is still lasted longer than albums by other older artists. It is amazing how little WBR has done to help CTTT. I hope Cher leaves them after this is over. They suck.

  11. I do agree that had the Gaga duet been included it would have been a smash and it also would have kept Gaga's album from flopping so spectacularly!

  12. Yes Dishy I agree with you. What Gaga did was beyond belief. I never recall a song getting as much press as The Greatest Thing for both Cher and Gaga. RedOne loved it as did Cher. When Gaga pulled the plug it was rather shocking. Many of us preferred The Greatest Thing to either Woman's World or Applause. Anyway Gaga got bad charma by it and her album is doing badly especially compared to the other younger girls like Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Lorde and even Beyonce. The reason why artists collaborate is to get airplay and get new people to hear their music. Gaga's second single did really badly on the charts so now her label is wondering what to do.

Hey at least Ga's label will try to get things on track for her. Cher's label has NO clue what to do!

  13. Agreed gaga f**ked it all up,, gaga blinded as a bat, tis would have put her in a more respectfully position..she missed that boat.. it was good to see that many of reviews were more then just mild! Once again we all know WBR did very little to support CHER we got to admit CTTT held its own,, it fell off the BB top 200 and RE-ENTERED.. as for another album?! PLS NO MORE DANCE MUSIC! ballads is what she does BEST.. she needs to use her own ISIS PRODUCTION company to put out new work, as she did with NOT COMMERCIAL

    ReplyDelete
  14. The crazy thing about DANCE music is that ALLLLL current songs now get mixed for dance. I never really noticed until Cher's BALLAD from Burlesque YHSTLOM got on the Dance chart and went to #1. That shocked me but now I see nearly all the gals do it. Because of this ANY song (ballad) can be mixed for dance. I agree with you NYCristophe that Cher no longer needs to record Dance songs since ANY Cher song can get mixed. Cher should record whatever she feels like recording. I love Cher doing ballads and rock and standards. Dance stuff ruins her beautiful voice. Dance songs are actually better for someone who CANNOT sing since vocals are so drowned out.
