Cher's 'Closer To The truth' Debuts at #3 on Billboard 200!

Cher, 'Closer To The Truth'
Cher's new album 'Closer To The Truth' has debuted at #3 on the US Billboard 200 - becoming her highest ever debut and her highest-charting solo album on the chart!

With over 60,000 copies sold, Cher's 25th solo studio album 'Closer To The Truth' has debuted at #3 on the US Billboard 200. Prior to this, Cher's highest solo peak position on the US chart was #4 - accomplished with 2003's 'The Very Best of Cher' and 1998's 'Believe'.

Her previous highest debut on the chart was #7 - again, accomplished with 'The Very Best of Cher'. Her previous highest debut with a studio album was #9 - with her last one, 2002's 'Living Proof'.

'Closer To The Truth' has been expected to debut at #3 since Billboard predicted so two days after its 24 September release.

The top four of this week's Billboard 200 - which won't be published until Thursday on their website - consists of new releases, with Cher's kind-of contemporary Elton John debuting one place below her:

This week's Billboard 200 top 5:
1. Nothing Was The Same - Drake
2. Mechanical Bull - Kings of Leon
3. Closer To The Truth - Cher
4. Diving Board - Elton John
5. Crash My Party - Luke Bryan

Outside of her solo career, Cher only reached higher on the Billboard 200 with Sonny & Cher's 1965 #2 debut album 'Look At Us'. The presence of her new album on the chart means that her span of US Top 3 albums exceeds 48 years - which is an accomplishment shared by few artists. 'Closer To The Truth' is her 41st hit album on the Billboard 200 - and her 25th solo.

  1. Best news of the day! One of the ONLY few artists with an album to chart within the Top 40 in the last 50 years! #AllHailTHEQueen

  3. Who cares if it went to number 3? The album sales are embarrassing! It only sold a pitiful 61,000 copies. That's WAY less than Living Proof or Believe sold the week of their releases. At the end of the day it's about sales, not chart positions, so this is a total flop. Sad.

  4. Cool Fact: Cher now holds the distinction with Barbra Streisand as the oldest female with a top 3 album debut. On the other hand, Cher is so far the oldest female artist to have a top 5 album in each decade: 1998 Believe #4, 2003 The Very Best Of Cher #4, 2013 Closer to the Truth #3. :-)

  5. Album sales are lower for all artists now since many people not only do not buy physical CDs but do not even download full albums. They only download specific songs. It is not the #3 debut that is such a big deal since all albums enter high now. It is the fact she did it with no single even at AC Radio and of course is a 67 year-old woman who has not had a full album out in 12 years. The problem with the Billboard Top 200 chart now is that old catalog albums are now eligible for the chart and take up space so most new albums (even those that enter at #1) fall off the Top 200 in 10-12 weeks or even shorter. Many old albums on the chart are there due to 99 cent downloads and some albums (usualy old compilation albums) are only on download and super cheap so newer albums like CTTT at full price are at a disadvantage.

  7. I understand it is presales gathered during a longer period so it is not sales this week? The no1 spot has sold over 650.000! How is that even possible to have gap of almost 600.000 copies between no1 & no3? I think it will be a bumpy ride on Billboard when people really understand how good this CD really is. Remember it is yet another generation of listeners who has to discover the wonder of Cher... And of course the recordsales now is much different from 1998? Does anybody really buy records anymore? At least physical CDs? I have ordered a vinyl and a Delux Fan Edition real copy. But I'm die hard fan :-)

  9. Gay PANDEMONIUM broke out here in L.A. on CD release date. Of course I am aware of Cher's kinship with us, but maybe I didn't know the intensity of it. By 2pm on that day NO Targets in all of Los Angeles and even the adjoining little cities had *any* in stock. As far as that particular version of the CD went...shelves were bare. Everywhere. There is a horrible little city 150 miles away called Bakersfield, and I asked a friend there to look at their Target for me. Bare shelves again! I had to order it. I asked the store clerk "can you look in your stock room? Please. There must be ONE left..." She laughed and said "do you have any idea how many people came in and said that today?" I thought that was funny. So the Target version, at least the first week, was extremely sought after. It's excellent. Absolutely worth the wait. Cher was excellent on David Letterman (who has long been in love with her!).

  11. Cher fans WANT physical CDs. WBR should have put Woman's World out on CD-Single and 12" Vinyl since Cher fans would have bought them. Cher sells well, especially maxi singles. Most of us prefer to buy the physical CD then download. Hopefully I Hope You Find It will make it at Adult Contemporay Radio. AC radio plays MALE acts that are older like Paul McCartney and Elton John but no so much with older FEMALES. Radio is not only ageist but sexist. We need Cher to be the OLDEST female to make it at AC Radio!!! I am referring to USA radio since I cannot speak for the rest of the world. I hear the BBC Radio has added Cher's I Hope You Find It bigtime so hopefully the USA AC Radio stations will do the same!

  13. Cher is more than a big name in Pop Culture.....She is Pop Culture! I wish I could elaborate but it's like me describing what GOD looks like. Her contribution to Music, Film, TV, Fashion, etc. makes her an important figure.

  14. The music Biz is a big mess now. Albums sell big in week 1 due to pre-sales that are for many weeks if not months. 60-70K is a great number for week one. The key is week 2 and beyond. Younger acts have SINGLES at radio. Dance club stuff does not sell albums. Radio does. Hopefully WBR will push for Adult Contemporary Radio for Cher. Bundling CTTT with Tour tickets will help as well. I hope CTTT can last on the Top 200 album chart for many weeks but it is hard to even last 10 weeks on the Billboard Top 200. If Cher can linger for 15-20 weeks it will be a big deal! Let's hope for Radio Play at AC stations for I Hope You Find It. That is the key to the albums longevity.

  15. So we as Cher fans need to go out in force and buy more albums and give them as gifts! I purchased 5 from Target! My god they are only 10$ apiece. I plan on buying more! I give them to my staff. I ever sent one for free to San Juan to a fan who couldn't get the target version there. We are all in this together! Unite and be one! Let's make sure she stays on top! I know I am!

  16. I Walk Alone is a song from CTTT, and one I've been jamming and lip synching to lately (lol). All jokes aside.....my point is I think she could have recorded a Country/Pop Album after hearing the track a few hundred times now, despite the fact I do enjoy the album and it's entirety :-)

  17. Yes, I adore I Walk Alone and Lie to Me and Sirens and all the ballads. Cher has a great voice and would be perfect for a country/rock album.

  18. James H, great idea. I am doing that too! Lots of new people are getting Cher's CTTT this way.

  21. Cher inspires me. Which I'm only 13 and she like my role model to me. I look up to her. My dad isn't my role model or my mom because they did bad stuff. Plus, my old brother is dead. He was special needs. Its hard being the oldest with all sisters and a brothers looking up to you. I just want to thank Cher for being her best. Keep on changing those lives with a miracle girl. :)
