Sonny & Cher released their debut album 'Look At Us' in 1965. It reached #2 on the US Billboard 200 - a position it held for a whopping 8 weeks! Cher's solo studio album 'All I Really Want To Do' followed it to the Top 20, staying on the charts for six months. Both albums sold over a million copies, and reached the UK Top 10. By the end of the 1960's, Cher had placed 8 studio albums on the US album chart.
Cher began the 1970's by once again releasing million-selling studio albums both solo ('Gypsy's, Tramps & Thieves') and with Sonny ('All I Ever Need Is You'). These two Grammy Award-nominated Gold-certified releases were followed by 7 more charting studio albums by decade's end - one with Sonny and six solo - including the Gold-certified 'Half-Breed' and 'Take Me Home'.
1987's 'Cher' became her first Platinum-certified release in the US and first gold-certified release in the UK. 1989's 'Heart of Stone' became her first #1 album ever, when it topped the Australian album charts. It also became her first US top 10 album and was certified 3-times-Platinum there for shifting 3 million copies.
1991's multi-million-selling 'Love Hurts' spent 6 weeks at #1 in the UK and was certified triple-platinum. 'Believe' became her biggest-selling album of all-time when released in 1998, selling well over 10 million copies and being certified at least Gold in almost 40 countries - including four-times-Platinum in the US. 2001's US top ten 'Living proof' became Cher's 6th consecutive studio album to be certified at least Gold in the UK.
Of course Cher's strong back-catalogue has given her huge success with compilation albums. Her first of such was 1967's 'The Best of Sonny & Chér', which spent 67 weeks on the US chart. 'Greatest Hits: 1965-1992' spent 7 weeks at #1 in the UK, going triple Platinum. Altogether, 1999's European chart-topping 'The Greatest Hits' and 2003's US#4 'The Very Best of Cher' have sold over 5.5 million copies worldwide.
Cher - who has spent over 900 weeks on the US album chart - has also seen success with live and soundtrack albums, including Gold-certified albums 'Sonny & Chér Live' (1971) and 2010's 'Burlesque: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack' (2010).
2013 saw Cher release her first studio album in 12 years, 'Closer To The Truth'. It has already given Cher her highest debut ever on the Billboard 200, her highest solo position on the chart, and has expanded her span of US Top 3 albums to an astounding 48 years!
