Cher's 1998 monster hit 'Believe' has made a return to the UK music charts, coming in at number 40 on the country's official dance chart! Almost fifteen years after its release, the song is still the best-selling single of all-time by a female solo artist in the United Kingdom - selling close to 1.8 million copies there. 'Believe' also spent three weeks on the dance chart - officially titled Dance Chart Top 40 - in September of last year when UK 'X Factor' contestant Ella Henderson did a much-discussed ballad rendition of the song on the show.
Cher will make an appearance on UK TV show 'Daybreak' on Thursday 6 September. The synopsis of the episode - which starts at 6AM - reads, "Ross King chats to music legend Cher about her long and varied career, including her new album - her first in over a decade."
News broke today that UK-born television presenter Sir David Frost died yesterday, aged 74. Frost thrice had Sonny & Cher as guests on his U.S. 'The David Frost Show' during a period when their music had fallen from public favor - 4 September 1969, 17 June 1970 and 19 July 1971. (They were back on top before too long though, of course!)
For fun's sake, 'Cher News' asked an array of celebrity Cher fans to reveal their all-time favorite Cher songs...
RuPaul (@RuPaul)
Like Cher, he is known by just one name. And by his choice of favorite Cher songs, it is clear that the long-legged multi-talented drag queen is a big fan of the 67-year-old music legend. The ever-extravagant RuPaul has found success as an actor, model, author, recording artist and TV personality - one example of the latter being his 'The RuPaul Show', which Cher appeared on in 1997.
Q: What is your favorite Cher song?
A: 'Save Up All Your Tears', 'The Gunman', 'Bang Bang' with Bon Jovi.
Loree Rodkin (@missrodkin)
One of Cher's closest friends - as evidenced by the frequent snapshots of pair together. Rodkin is a jewelry designer for some of the world's most-recognizable stars, including Cher, and once managed the careers of Hollywood A-listers Brad Pitt and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Q: What is your favorite Cher song?
A: 'Just Like Jesse James'
Charlie Hides (@charliehidestv)
A big Cher fan who imitates her - and other celebrities - to a tee frequently in videos on his popular YouTube channel, which has a staggering ten million views. He even managed to get Aussie superstar Kylie Minogue to star in one of his latest ones!
Q: What is your favorite Cher song?
A: 'Heart of Stone', 'Song For The Lonely' and 'Strong Enough' top my list
Debbie Gibson (@DebbieGibson)
During the days of her (no doubt, electric) youth, Debbie Gibson twice topped the US Hot 100, and just like one of her idols, Cher, she continues to make music decades on from her teen debut and has found success in film and television. Unlike Cher, however, Gibson has a US#1 album in her back-catalogue - hopefully something that Cher will achieve with forthcoming release 'Closer To The Truth'
Q: What is your favorite Cher song?
A: 'Half Breed'! And 'If I Could Turn Back Time' of course!
Cher
Despite it bringing joy to the ears of millions of music-listeners around the globe during the last half-a-century, Cher is self-admittedly not a fan of her own voice! HOW!!?... I don't know. But Cher does seem to have a favorite song somewhere in her back-catalogue of musical gems - the 9/11-dedicated 'Song For The Lonely'...
Q: What is your favorite Cher song?
A: I don't ever listen to my albums... 'Song For The Lonely'. that's one of my favorite songs. There's a song on 'Closer To The Truth' about 9/11 called 'Sirens'... It's a really beautiful song.
Short share:
- Cher's official 'Woman's World' music video has surpassed half-a-million views on popular video-sharing site YouTube!
- 'Woman's World' has slipped one place on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart to #30
It is a shame Warner Brothers did not release Closer to the Truth in the UK and everywhere overseas and NOT in the USA first. In the USA market ageism is rampant. In the rest of the world music is judged on how it sounds. Cher's Woman's World will do well in the UK and all of the rest of the world. I am glad CTTT will be out there but once again it is a shame WBR did not handle this as they should. If Woman's World and CTTT was out internationally FIRST, the USA radio programmers would have seen how the rest of the world loved it and played it. Cher is an unusual case since at 67 she is the oldest female pop act to ever get ANY airplay in the USA. It just could have been more. It will be nice to see Cher getting adds at international radio.
ReplyDeleteI agree with that. Woman's World should have been released in the UK earlier as soon as it premiered back in November and now it's not been releasing in the UK till October it's nearly a year. She will have to promote it maybe on X Factor or something like that. I am not to worried about how the album will sell because it's her first album in years people will buy it. I hope Woman's World goes top 10 and then Cher's legacy continues.
ReplyDeleteYes, Ben W, you are right. WW would have done well in the UK and all over the world. The USA music market is horrible. Even artists that are not that old like Britney Spears (age 31) struggle for airplay. Ageism is so prevalent in the US music market it is sad. Also, songs that do not feature and urban act like a rapper or R&B act do not get play in many urban markets. Very few mainstream artists over 30 get max play other than country artists. Warners also did not plan well since Cher will need to promote WW and CTTT overseas at the same time her second single is ready in the USA.
ReplyDeleteI don´t think I have ever seen the number 67 so many times in my whole life...
