This week, the trailer for Nina—the Nina Simone biopic starring Zoe Saldana, which will come out next month—was released. While the controversy surrounding Saldana’s casting for the role as the iconic singer and pianist remains, there is no question the real Simone’s legendary look was as memorable as her music. After all, it’s hard not to associate the woman with those penciled-in eyebrows, or those expert layers of black eyeliner and blue eyeshadow, occasionally emphasized by the deft placement of rhinestones along the lash line. Then there were the braids, the abbreviated Afro, the hair jewelry, the head scarves, all of which add up to an inimitable approach to beauty that joins a legacy of musicians whose appearances were as signature as their sound.
After all, would you mistake a shock of bright orange hair and dramatically carved cheekbones for anyone other than David Bowie? Curtains of hip-grazing, jet-black lengths are practically synonymous with Cher. But, when paired with an exaggerated beehive and a thick flick of black eyeliner, you’re looking at an unmistakable likeness of Amy Winehouse.
