Gaga Suggests That 'The Greatest Thing' Wasn't Good Enough For Cher

Cher / Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga talked about refusing Cher their duet 'The Greatest Thing' for her new album.

Appearing on US chat show 'Watch What Happens Live' to plug her new album 'ARTPOP', Lady Gaga talked about her Cher duet 'The Greatest Thing'. Of course, the Gaga-penned song was to be included on Cher's new album 'Closer To The Truth' but Gaga pulled it near-last-minute.

The 'Applause' singer said on the show, "I have so much respect for Cher and I love Cher so much that when we do a duet that we release, I wanted it to be something that was really really special... we just didn't have time to work on it together... We recorded it [separately]... and I wrote the song a long time ago."

Gaga suggested that 'The Greatest Thing' "wasn't up to par" with Cher's impressive back-catalogue, which boasts the likes of perennial favorites 'I Got You Babe', 'Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves', 'If I Could Turn Back Time' and 'Believe'; "To be fair, if I was writing a song for Cher now, I would want to hear her album and I want to know where she is in her life. I would want to talk to her about where she is going musically, and I didn't get to do any of those things. So I didn't want to put out something that wasn't up to par with what Cher has put out before. It's not really about me, it's more about her. Because it's Cher!"

Cher's new album 'Closer To The Truth' will be out in North America on 24 September.

  1. That sounds reasonable. It figures! The song is okay, its good, but when Gaga would have had the chance to really work with Cher in studio, at home, writing only and especially for her voice, for the greatest diva in music industry, then something much better would have come out. So the leaked version is nice to have for all the fans. I'm actually listening to it daily on my ipod, but it's not the outstanding song that everyone assumed.

  2. After hearing the snippets of Closer To The Truth I think the album doesn't need that single. I thin it was an ok track but the new tracks on Closer To The Truth sound amazing I have been listening last night and as soon as I got up it'll be in my head when I am at work.

  4. Cher is 67. Gaga is 27. In the USA Radio will not play age 67 no matter who it is. The whole Point of TGT was to get Cher on at US Radio. Gaga was a 4 letter word beginning with C to Cher. The Greatest Thing has been a mess from the time it was cut in July 2011. I don't think there has ever been any song with as much drama. Sadly without the Greatest Thing none of Cher's songs will get USA radio play. It is not because they are not good it is ageism. Maybe overseas Cher can get airplay. I hope so but in the USA it really sucks that older acts do not get radio adds except on the smaller Adult Contemporary stations.

  5. Lady Gaga gave a gift to Cher "The Greatest Thing" for her new album. After she took it back. Not right!!! Cher will need to be on TV because America radio does not play anyone over 45 years old. America radio plays the same songs over and over again. The Lady Gaga duet would have had radio play in the USA radio.

  6. Cher won't get any radio play with this new album. Sad, but true. The only song that MAY have a chance is "Take It Like a Man" but that's because of all the autotune on it.

Cher is smart. If she really wanted to be back on the radio, she would have enlisted T.I., Rihanna, Katy Perry, Chris Brown, or Adele. Otherwise, she has no chance, except on the Dance chart.

I think the album is brilliant and I can't wait to get it! Just don't be expecting any of these songs on the Billboard Top 200

  7. If USA wont play cher because of her age or anybody Else because of age then it shows that americans only care for image and nothing about music. Which explains all nonsens artist with no talent showing up from there. We in europe Will welcome cher with open arms!

  8. USA Radio is super ageist. Britney Spears is only 30 or 31 but is treated as an older woman. Her last single OOO La La went nowhere and got nearly no play and died at radio. Had her song been Britney spears featuring Lil'Wayne or Nicki Minaj or Jay-Z or any other rapper/R&B act it would have had more airplay. Cher & Gaga WOULD have had USA airplay. Even Gaga is struggling. Applause peaked and is now falling. Granted it is in the Top 10 but will not go to #1. Katy Perry is at #1 since she is considered more normal... By the way, by the time Katy and Gaga are in their mid-30's they will struggle more and by 40 will likely get very little radio play and by the time they are 45 it will be over unless they feature hot young acts. I think it is sickening myself and unfair. Older male acts have more airplay but for female musical acts AGE is a big factor. Cher at 67 broke records just hitting the Billboard Bubbling Under chart at #125 with WW!!! Just think Cher first hit the Billboard bubbling under chart in 1964!

    1. But it's not radio that is ageist. It's the people that listen to it. If they have no audience they can't get commercials and with that no income. You have the power to change.

  9. Radio is on in our cars, workplace, public spaces. It is all over. NO 67 year-old gets airplay in the USA on ANY mainstream station. I would love to have Cher on mainstream radio but unless she features a younger act like Pink or Gaga there is no chance. Just being #125 was a very BIG DEAL since she did it as a solo and was the first woman of her age to do it. The Greatest Thing would have got mainstream airplay and would have been at least Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100. Sadly WW is not even on the Adult Contemporary Chart now. Radio in the USA has been like this for years now.

    1. Sad to hear that. I guess there is nothing to do then.
